Imagine a 16-inch square ruler made of transparent plastic, decked out with a series of 12-inch-long parallel slits, spaced exactly 1/2″ apart. And if you look closer, you’ll spot equally spaced 12-inch-long black lines, running perpendicular to these slits.

Initially, I thought I’d mainly use the Shape Cut for, well, cutting strips. However, after some experimentation, it’s a star player for other shapes too! What sets it apart? Instead of sliding your rotary cutter along the outside as with typical rulers, with the Shape Cut, you’re zipping your cutter through these neat slits.
At first, it might feel like you’re rewriting the quilting rulebook, but trust me, the method is a game-changer! It simplifies the process, making you way more efficient. Imagine bypassing the whole ‘align, cut, reposition, repeat’ dance. With the Shape Cut, you align, cut, and cut, and cut…you get the gist. A ton of fabric cut swiftly, and squaring up is a breeze each time you shift the ruler.
Strips in a Jiffy!
When I tried cutting strips, I had my fabric folded neatly, aligning the folds with the Shape Cut’s markings. The result? A multitude of perfectly squared strips, all ready for my log cabin quilt. Whether it’s binding strips or bias cuts, the Shape Cut delivered beautifully!
But Which Rotary Cutter Fits the Bill?
My dear friend Jean and I played around with different cutters to see which one syncs perfectly with the Shape Cut. The Olfa 60mm? Too large for the teardrop openings. Olfa 28mm? Too straight-up and uncomfortable. After trying others like Fiskars 45mm and a generic one from JoAnn’s, the champion emerged – Olfa Quick Change Rotary Cutter with a 28mm blade.
