Hey there, fellow quilters! ✨ It’s Gina, and I’m here to share a little secret I’ve stumbled upon in the world of quilting. Ever heard of the Shout Color Catcher? It’s this nifty little sheet that grabs hold of those pesky dyes that might wander off from our fabrics during laundry, potentially saving our beautiful quilts from disaster! So, obviously, I had to give it a whirl.
The dimensions of the Shout sheet are 6-1/4 x 7-1/4. Here’s a little tip: considering halving the sheet when washing lighter fabrics could be a wallet-friendly move. Fresh out of the box, it feels cozy, reminding me of the soft, fuzzy feel of flannel.
Experiment Time!
I packed my washing machine to the brim – think half a laundry basket of fresh fat quarters. Oh, and for good measure, I added some bed sheets. Popped in one Shout sheet and let the magic happen. And you know what? After the wash, the sheet emerged with a hue of captured dyes! It transformed into something that felt like a robust stabilizer and bore the appearance of a mottled fabric with a rich red-violet touch.
Exploring Alternatives
While Shout is a game-changer, let’s not forget there’s a whole universe of dye-catchers out there. My fellow quilt enthusiasts in Canada mention the Zero Dye Magnet. Is it Shout’s twin or a distinct star in the galaxy? Still researching that! Carbona is another brand on the radar with their laundry sheets. And then there’s Rit and Dylon, offering powders to sprinkle in your laundry, though they might be a tad pricier in the long run.
I’ve also come across PRO Chemical & Dye and their gems – Retayne and Synthropol. While Retayne acts as a guardian, ensuring reactive dyes don’t stray, Synthropol is more of a cleaner-upper. It swooped in to save some of my freshly dyed fabrics from color bleed. However, it played coy with some commercially dyed ones.
Quirky Discoveries ️♀️
Some swear by a plain white washcloth or a snippet of tricot to capture wandering dyes. Intriguing, right? I’m yet to test these, but it’s on my to-do list!
So, my quilt-loving friends, with so many tools at our disposal, there’s no reason for despair if a new fabric or garment threatens to rain on our laundry parade. Got a fabric mishap? Try these tricks and tools before tossing in the towel!
