Hey there, quilt enthusiasts!
Received a curious question from a lovely Quilter’s Review reader:
“Do you design your projects meticulously or let them evolve on-the-fly?”
Good question! While I always have a blueprint, quilting for me is an adventure! The journey from the inception of an idea to its realization can be pretty dynamic. Yes, I doodle and jot down my brainstorming ideas, but many times, it’s like a puzzle unfolding in my mind.
By the start of my project, I’ll have at least a vibrant sense of the quilt’s aura. And sometimes, if I’m lucky, a vivid mental image of the masterpiece-to-be.
My Fabric Adventures ️
Shopping for fabrics? It’s all about the project’s mood for me. I don’t hoard fabrics or buy without purpose. Instead, I head out with an intention, envisioning the color, texture, and vibes I want.
And of course, life happens amidst all this (a quick snack, husband-time, or maybe driving my son). I feel the real ‘chat’ with my quilt starts right when I pick the fabric. There’s a bond, and together we navigate the creative surprises that pop up!
Over time, I’ve become more spontaneous. Some of the wildest ideas lead to the most unexpected, beautiful results! And hey, if you’re looking to dive deep into quilting, there are tons of insightful books out there. One of my favs? Quilt as You Go Made Modern.
Recent Project Glimpse
Just wrapped up a bed quilt for my dear mother-in-law! It transformed from a plan with 81 pieced blocks to a vibrant 111″ square quilt with 140 blocks! And thank heavens for my AccuQuilt Go! fabric cutter – a real time-saver. And the borders? Took a creative spin there too!
Quilting is all about the journey. Sometimes you pivot, sometimes you stick. For instance, during my pop-up quilt project, no amount of pondering gave me the solution. Had to get hands-on!
Jotting down my Thought Trail
I keep a repository of ideas. As the quilt starts shaping up, these initial thoughts guide my next steps. A trick I use? Keep fabric snippets with me. Especially when fabric shopping, it acts as a focus guide amidst the overwhelming choices. For example, I once searched for warm florals, avoiding blues. The snippets helped me stay true to my vision and trust my instincts, despite contrasting opinions.
Your Quilting Persona
Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all in quilting. Discover your rhythm, choose projects you connect with, and there’ll be no ‘suffering’ – only joy in creation. Don’t bite off more than you can chew and always trust your gut!
