Unlocking the Mysteries of Muslin
Hello my fellow quilt enthusiasts! It’s Gina here, your go-to quilting artist! ❤️ I’ve received a great question from one of our community members: “With so many choices of muslin out there, how do I pick one that’s both a steal and top-notch?”.
First off, let’s get this straight: Not all muslins are created equal! The price often reflects the quality of the muslin. But don’t worry, I’ve got a fun exercise to help you become a muslin maestro!
Always have a trusted muslin swatch, around 9″ x 9″, in your bag when you’re out shopping. This swatch should feel smooth to touch, a sign that the threads are neither too fat nor too thin. You don’t want anything too stiff; that’s an overload of sizing and fabric finish!
The way the fabric feels, its “hand”, is crucial. If you hold your swatch up against the light, it shouldn’t be too transparent – a quick way to gauge the thread count. Now, what’s thread count, you ask? It’s the number of threads per inch both ways. Ideally, for quilting, we’re looking at about 66 x 66 or 68 x 68 threads per inch. Anything less, and it might just wear out faster and look a bit sparse.
Now, here’s a pro tip: While shopping, make it a habit to feel the fabrics. You’ll soon get the knack for spotting that perfect hand and the right thread count. Shopping online? Check the thread count details or better yet, order a sample, even if it costs a tad more. Trust me, it’s worth it!
Remember, a higher price tag often means better quality. But, always keep an eye out for discounts and sales. Once you find “The One”, jot down the fabric company’s name and the fabric’s specific name or number. This makes reordering a breeze!
However, there’s a tiny caveat: just because you loved a fabric once, doesn’t guarantee it’ll always be the same. Occasionally, there might be some changes, so always stay sharp!
By the way, here are a couple of muslins I absolutely adore:
- Rockland Unbleached/Natural Muslin
- Crafty Cuts Muslin
