My Quest for the Perfect Quilting Marking Method! ✨
Hey, it’s Gina here! Throughout my quilting journey, I’ve experimented with nearly every quilting marking method out there. Every quilt project became a chance to test a different marker or pencil. Some were great for light fabrics, but they would play peek-a-boo, appearing out of nowhere later. And oh boy, finding something suitable for dark fabric was a challenge!
When I embarked on a new applique project, I tried the Quilter’s Choice Marking Pencil (the white one) to trace the intricate design onto my dark fabric. Guess what? Every line I traced was as vivid as the moment I drew it, even after handling the fabric multiple times!
The Ultimate Marking Pencil Showdown
I got curious! How did Quilter’s Choice pencils (both white and silver) measure up against my vast collection?
1. Drawing Showdown ️
On dark fabrics, while a few pencils gave somewhat decent lines, only the Quilter’s Choice white pencil left a strikingly visible line without much fuss. For light fabrics, I took out the Quilter’s Choice silver, a washable graphite, and a standard 0.5mm pencil. All of them worked well, but the mechanical pencil drew the most delicate line. ✏️
2. The Pressure Test
Pushing down hard just to see a line? Not my style. On dark fabrics, only the Quilter’s Choice pencil worked effortlessly. Others either needed pressure or broke too often. Thankfully, all pencils did great on white fabric.
3. Smudge Alert!
After marking, I swiped my hand over those lines on the dark fabric. Guess which pencil’s mark remained untouched? Yep, Quilter’s Choice. I even tried to rub them off, and only the Quilter’s Choice lines stood firm. For the white fabric, washing was the only way since all my markers were washable.
4. Wash and Tell
For the ultimate test, I washed both dark and light fabrics. With just cold water, the Quilter’s Choice marks vanished, while others were still partying. Even after using soap, only the Quilter’s Choice marks made a complete exit! But, there’s always a but, right? If you’re working on something you can’t wash, being able to brush away lines could be a game-changer.
5. Wipe It Down
I reapplied the Quilter’s Choice marks to see how they fare with wiping. On the dark fabric, the lines wiped away seamlessly. However, the silver lines on the white fabric were a tad stubborn. They lightened but stayed put, similar to the mechanical pencil post washing. ♀️
So, after this rollercoaster of tests, I’m almost ready to crown the Quilter’s Choice Marking Pencils as my go-to. But if I’m working on light fabric that can’t touch water, maybe some masking tape will come to the rescue!
